Amazon Kindle Fire Hits 95,000 Pre-Orders in 24 Hours

Amazon's Kindle Fire, the sub-£200 7in Android tablet, achieved more than 95,000 pre-orders within 24 hours of its launch on Wednesday 28 September. That may not be an iPad-beating figure, but it gives most Android tablets a black eye or two.

According to figures released by digital marketing company eDataSource, the Amazon Kindle Fire achieved 95,000 pre-orders within its first 24 hours of existence in the public eye. It became available to pre-order on Amazon.com very shortly after Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos took to the stage to announce the new tablet on Wednesday 28 September.

95,000 units represents just a third of the sales the iPad 2 managed in its first day, but is impressive given it's a very different product for the Kindle series, and one that won't ship until November 15 - a solid six weeks after the announcement. Amazon has partnered-up with key US retailers like Best Buy for the tablet's US launch, but it's not currently available to pre-order through the Best Buy website.

The striking thing about the Amazon Kindle Fire is that it offers impressive specs while sticking at a rock-bottom price point. It has a dual-core 1GHz processor and a high-quality 7in IPS display, both stand up fairly well against the iPad 2, but retails for just $199. Reviews of the device are yet to surface, though, so any US readers might want to consider waiting for our TrustedReviews verdict to see if it's a secret dud.

UK availability details haven't yet been released, but at this rate we'd be lucky to see the Kindle Fire on our shores before 2012. The 2010 edition of the Kindle went up for pre-order at the same time in both the US and UK back in August 2010, but Amazon is slipping back into its old ways with the latest-gen Kindles. Out of the whole range, we can only currently pre-order the non-Touch Kindle, for £89.
