The Amazon Kindle Fire HDX is now available in the UK, with the heavily skinned Android tablet lining up as an iPad mini 2 rival.
Officially unveiled back in September, the 7-inch Amazon Kindle Fire HDX has been available in the US for some time, although today marks the tablet’s first appearance in the UK. The Google Nexus 7 rival has started shipping to British shores just one day after the iPad mini 2 was made available for purchase.
“We think customers in UK are going to love the new Kindle Fire HDX,” said Jorrit Van der Meulen, Vice President, EU Amazon Kindle. They added: “We can’t wait to get this tablet into our customers’ hands.”
Amazon Kindle Fire HDX Features
A direct follow-on to last year’s Amazon Kindle Fire HD, the new HDX sees an improved specs sheet land alongside the introduction of a 4G capable model.
Powered by a 2.2GHz quad-core processor, the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX packs a 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution and 323 pixels-per-inch image density within its HD display.
Featuring the latest Fire O.S. 3.0 “Mojito” software, the updated tablet comes equipped with new features exclusive to the device, such as Kindle FreeTime and X-Ray, now expanded for films and TV.
Also included is Amazon’s answer for time wasted waiting for tech support. The Mayday button offers users free technical assistance from a Kindle expert, with an ambitious response time of just 15 seconds.
Available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB storage forms, the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX lines up at just 9mm thick. While the Wi-Fi only model weighs a reasonable 303g, the Wi-Fi plus 4G option is a slightly portlier 311g in weight.

Friendlier on your wallet than Apple’s latest tablet offerings, Amazon Kindle Fire HDX prices start from just £199 for the Wi-Fi only 16GB model.
With the 32GB and 64GB Wi-Fi only options jumping to £229 and £259 in price respectively, adding 4G capabilities to the mix adds £70 to each price point.
