Amazon has announced that the Kindle Fire HD tablet is the “#1 best-selling product across all of Amazon worldwide”, a clear reaction to the impending launch of the iPad mini.
The Amazon Kindle Fire HD is one of the main rivals for the iPad mini, due to be launched tonight at 6PM GMT, and Amazon claims it is the “best-selling” product in its arsenal. However, the retailer has not released any sales figures for the tablet, and a search of Amazon’s site raises some doubts about what the claim actually means.
The Kindle Fire HD may not have launched in the UK yet, but according to the Amazon UK website, both the non-HD Kindle Fire and the Kindle Paperwhite are more popular than the Kindle Fire HD. Neither of these products are available yet in the UK either.
What could Amazon mean with its “best-selling” claim? It may indicate the sales relative to the number produced, or relative to pre-release predictions.
The Amazon Kindle Fire HD is available to buy in the US now, and is set to ship in the UK from 25 October. It’ll cost £159 for the 16GB edition, or £199 for the 32GB edition. This is a little cheaper than the Google Nexus 7, although Argos is already advertising a 32GB version for £199, closing this gap.
The Amazon Kindle Fire HD is a 7-inch tablet with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and 1,280 x 800 pixel resolution. It differentiates itself from most other Android-based tablets by using a bespoke Amazon user interface that represents much more of a change than most other custom interfaces. However, as part of the deal it misses out on the Google Play store, using Amazon’s Appstore instead.
