Amazon is to launch two new tablets this year, according to the latest tablet rumour. A 7in Kindle Fire 2 and larger 10in version are expected, and could be just two of a handful of tablets with a much of a chance of success in 2012.

There is reason to doubt this rumour, though. It comes from DigiTimes, one of the most notorious rumour-mongers on the net. Unnamed "industry sources" are cited as the source for the news.

Not new. Still waiting.

The original Kindle Fire reportedly shipped 3.98 million units in the last quarter of 2011, representing excellent pre-crimbo sales for the low-cost tablet. Of course, none of those sales come from Amazon.co.uk, as it's still not available to buy in the UK. Quite why a device so well-received both by critics and the public alike hasn't made it here - when we, aside from being on the small side, are generally gadget-ravenous as a market - isn't clear.

DigiTimes also writes that Amazon is shifting its focus away from traditional E-ink ereaders like the other Kindles, to further support the Kindle Fire. As a result, the revenues of E Ink Holdings, which makes those lovely E-ink screens, dropped 24%, month-on-month, in February.

The Kindle Fire runs a heavily modified version of Android. With latter models likely to use a similar system, the 10in model may well use a 10.1in screen like all the biggest Android tabs of 2011. As much as we’d like to see new Kindle Fire models appear, getting the first one on Amazon.co.uk is our top desire.
