Amazon Instant Video update brings 4G streaming to iOS app

The Amazon Instant Video iOS app has just been updated to allow streaming over your mobile network.

Previously, the retail giant’s video streaming service would only play back video on mobile devices on a Wi-Fi connection.

That was to help stop customers from (1) having a bad experience thanks to bad cellular service and (2) going over data allowances.

The latter is a real risk because streaming, particularly in HD, can chew through huge amounts of data very quickly.

However, the new update means that you can just use your 4G connection to stream content.

It’s a welcome move by Amazon as it puts the service on more level footing with Netflix, which already offers streaming sans Wi-Fi.

“With the new iOS app, Amazon prime Instant Video members can instantly watch over 15,000 popular movies and TV episodes at no additional cost to their membership over a mobile network and in HD,” explains Amazon.

The new update also lets users stream titles in HD picture quality on iOS, including on Apple TV by flinging via AirPlay.
