Amazon Instant Video coming to new Apple TV ‘within weeks’

Despite launching an app for iPhone and iPad, Amazon’s Prime Instant Video app has never been available on the Apple TV set top box.

However, according to an Amazon customer service representative, that’ll soon be rectified.

When engineer Dan Bostonweeks (via MacRumors) contacted the firm to bemoan the lack of a streaming app on the new tvOS platform, he was told it’ll arrive ‘within a few weeks.’

The representative wrote: “As we have already succeeded in developing an app for iPhone and iPad, we hope to make an app separately for the Apple TV. Hopefully, within a few weeks span, you will be able to see the Amazon Instant Video app feature on your Apple TV.”

The app would go up against the likes of Hulu and Netflix on the new box with Apple apparently welcoming all services to compete with iTunes.

Last month Amazon withdrew the sale of the Apple TV and Chromecast models, with the firm claiming it was important to have clarity over which devices supported Prime Video.

A spokesperson said: “[O]ver the last three years, Prime Video has become an important part of Prime.

“It’s important that the streaming media players we sell interact well with Prime Video in order to avoid customer confusion. Roku, Xbox, PlayStation and Fire TV are excellent choices.”

Now it seems Amazon simply hadn’t submitted an app to appear the new device just yet.

It’s also important to remember these comments came from a customer service rep, so it’s far from Amazon confirming the launch of the app.

We’ve reached out for confirmation and will update this story if it’s forthcoming.
