Amazon has introduced High Dynamic Range video to its Instant Video service.
The online retailer announced back in April that it would be making HDR video available through its streaming service, but we haven’t heard anything on it since.
Now the company has announced the availability of HDR content through Amazon Instant Video. However, it’s only available to Prime customers in the US to start with.
What’s more, there’s only the new Amazon Original Series Mozart in the Jungle that’s currently available with HDR, as well as the pilot episode of Red Oaks. Even then, customers will need a compatible Samsung SUHD TV to play it on.
While this restricts the number of people who might be able to experience Amazon’s HDR content significantly, at least it’s free to those who can. LG has also revealed that Amazon’s HDR content will work with its new OLED 4K TV.

Meanwhile, Netflix previously announced that it is to provide HDR content this year, with Sony and LG’s 2015 TVs already confirmed to be compatible with its efforts.
As with its camera implementation, HDR boosts the contrast levels on TV content, enhancing shadow details and brightening colours. We’re talking about a greater range of tones and colours represented on your TV screen – something that could arguably prove more transformative than yet another bump in resolution quality like 4K.
