Amazon has revealed that the number of apps for its Fire TV set top box has tripled since launch.

The company may have received a massive dent recently thanks to its critically under-performing Amazon Fire Phone, but it seems as if things are slightly rosier when it comes to the company's TV plans.

Not that Amazon has revealed any sales figures for the Amazon Fire TV, of course. That's not the retailer's style (annoyingly). But it has let out a press release pointing to another possible success metric.

Since the Amazon Fire TV launched in the US on April 2, the number of apps for the device has tripled. There are now more than 600 apps and games available for the device through the Amazon Appstore.

It's also worth noting Amazon's claim that nine out of the ten top-grossing Amazon Fire TV apps are games, which suggests that its bid to become an affordable home console alternative has at least partially succeeded.

This idea of the Amazon Fire TV becoming a successful games console is certainly one that Amazon seems keen to push. In the related press release, it features a couple of prominent quotes from game developers.

According to Todd Daniel of Shiny Box Games, "We are seeing world class performance metrics only a month in to the game being available on Amazon Fire TV. User retention and attachment rates are higher than any of our other platforms."

Amazon's announcement comes just as the Amazon Fire TV hits the UK for £79. If you want to turn it into a proper console, however, you'll need to splash out £34.99 for the dedicated game controller.
