Amazon Fire Phone

The Amazon Fire Phone has today launched in the UK, with the retailer's first smartphone hitting our fair shores after months of exclusivity in the US.

Having been unveiling back in June, today's Fire Phone UK release marks the handset's first jaunt outside its native homeland. The innovative smartphone is currently being offered exclusively through O2 in the UK.

Far from your standard Samsung Galaxy S5 or iPhone 5S challenger, the Amazon Fire Phone benefits from a Dynamic Perspective display.

This feature sees four front-facing cameras used to detect a user’s face movements. This data is then used to give on-screen content a 3D effect.

Smart screen aside, the Fire Phone’s specs sheet is a pretty middle of the road affair. The 4.7-inch panel features a standard 1280 x 720p HD resolution. It is partnered with a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB of RAM.

The phone’s hardware list is rounded off by a 13-megapixel rear-mounted camera, a 2.1-megapixel snapper up front, 32GB of internal storage and a 2400mAh Lithium-Ion battery.

On the software side, Google’s Android 4.4 KitKat OS offers the basis beneath the heavy Amazon Fire UI skin. The company’s Firefly technology is also present, with users able to add numbers and addresses to their handset simply by pointing their device’s at relevant details.

The Amazon Fire Phone is available for free on O2’s £33 per month, two year contracts. While there is currently no word on potential SIM-free pricing, the handset will set wannabe PAYG owners back £399.99.

With the Fire Phone now available in the UK, Amazon recently confirmed it will be bringing more of its hardware offerings over from the US.

Amazon Fire TV will hit the UK on October 23.
