Amazon’s changing the font on all of its Kindles

Amazon has begun rolling out its latest ‘Bookerly’ font to the entire Kindle range of e-book readers.

The online retail giant debuted a brand new font, called ‘Bookerly,’ with the release of the Kindle Paperwhite (2015) at the end of June.

This left the rest of the Kindle range using the previous ‘Caecilia’ font – a particular omission for the Kindle Voyage, which remains the company’s high-end offering. That’s now being amended.

Over on the Amazon website, you’ll find that there are updates available for the Kindle Voyage, Kindle Touch, Kindle (7th Generation), and both previous generations of the Kindle Paperwhite. Among the list of additions is the aforementioned ‘Bookerly’ font.

As we noted in our Kindle Paperwhite (2015) review, the new font “improves character spacing with hyphenation, justification and ligatures.” Essentially, it makes electronic books easier and more pleasant to read.

Aside from a new font, the latest Kindle software update brings a redesigned Smart Lookup feature, which provides easy access to the tools for highlighting text, creating notes, sharing quotes and the like whilst reading. You just need to tap on a word or sentence to bring the tool up, then swipe to see the next card.

Amazon has also made improvements to basic typography and layout, with additions like pop-up footnotes, endnotes and chapter notes.
