Rumours abound that the Amazon Appstore, which was launched in the US back in March, is now available to some users outside the 50 states.
Reports on the internet are suggesting that users across western Europe, India and Australia have all been able to access the curated Android app store despite no official word from Amazon that it has opened up the Appstore to everyone.
However, it’s not as straight forward as that, with many also reporting that they still could not access the store outside the US. Indeed we ourselves have been trying to purchase apps from the store this morning and are getting the usual message telling us the Appstore is “not available in our region.”
The Amazon Appstore offers a select number of apps compared to the Android Market but this eliminates a lot of the dross which clogs up the Market and frustrates users.
Of course another attraction of the Appstore is the Free App of the Day feature, where Amazon offers one new free app to download every day.
We are waiting to hear from Amazon about an official opening of the Appstore internationally, as it would seem to make sense for them to make the apps as widely available as possible.
We’d love to hear from you whether or not you’ve been able to access the Amazon Appstore today and if you think it’s a viable alternative to the Android Market.
