Amazon has confirmed that its Android app store, dubbed simply Appstore, will come to the UK. This is a pretty solid hint that the Kindle Fire – or its successor – will soon arrive in the UK.

The Amazon Appstore will come to the UK this summer, offering an alternative to the official Google Play app store. With most Android tablets, it’s hardly a must-have unless you really dig Amazon’s UI style, but this is a great big red flag-waving sign that Amazon is about to launch its own Android tablet in the UK. The Kindle Fire Android tab was released in the US way back in November 2011, but still isn’t available here.

Appstore chief Jim Adkins was keen to big-up the international potential of Amazon’s store, saying, “We see tremendous potential for developers to grow with the international expansion. We also encourage new developers to join." Although the Amazon Appstore is far from the only third-party Android app store – SlideME and GetJar are popular alternatives for non-certified budget tablets – its big-brand name gives it the potential for much greater mainstream recognition.

However, it was only with the launch of the Kindle Fire tablet that the Amazon Appstore started to gain prominence. The low-cost tablet does not feature the Google Play store, forcing those without the technical knowledge to crowbar Google’s store onto the tablet to use Amazon’s version.

Amazon has not yet confirmed that the Kindle Fire is coming to the UK. Fingers crossed, eh?
