Altered Carbon Release Date: Watch the first trailer for your next Netflix binge

Altered Carbon release date, trailers, cast and more

Sci-fi fans say hello to your next Netflix binge, Altered Carbon, which is ready to wipe away the winter blues when it’s released on February 2.

Channelling a combination of vibes and visuals from the likes of Blade Runner 2049, Ex Machina, and Deus Ex Human Revolution, Altered Carbon centres around the idea that humans can transfer their consciousness into fresh biologically grown human bodies thereby cheating death.

Rather predictably, the trailer hints heavily at this becoming an ethical, physiological and moral problem punctuated by heavy dollops of violence and colour saturated dystopian future aesthetics.

The upcoming series is based on the 2002 cyberpunk novel by Richard L Morgan and follows the story of Takeshi Kovacs, a former UN elite soldier from the Japanese-settled planet of Harlan’s World, who is killed only to wake up centuries later to find he is inhabiting the body of a disgraced policeman and has to investigate a murder mystery.

Set some 500 years in the future, we can expect to see a mix of faster-than-light travel with hardboiled cop thriller action.

Laeta Kalogridis, the writer and producer best known for her work on Shutter Island and Terminator Genesis, is on-board, alongside director Miguel Sapochnik, who directed the captivating ‘Battle of the Bastards’ episode of Game of Thrones. So Netflix appears to have some solid cinema calibre behind the camera.

On screen talent comes in the form of Joel Kinnaman, who’s starred in hit TV shows The Killing and Netflix original House of Cards. He takes on the staring role of Kovacs.

Netflix has seen a deluge of success with its ‘Originals’ series, lately including the likes of Star Trek Discovery and the third season of Narcos. So we have high hopes that Altered Carbon hits the same high standards, hopefully leaning more on the side of intriguing drama than pulpy sci-fi action.
