Alienware M11x Discontinued, Small Laptop Gaming Dies?

Ardjuna Seghers

If you want a mobile gaming machine in a small chassis, get your orders in for Alienware’s M11x now. Despite good sales and critical success when the Alienware M11x first came out, Dell isn’t refreshing its line of 11in gaming laptops. Basically, when they’re gone they’re gone, so if you have £700 burning a hole in your pocket, it might be worth investing in this dodo.

Towards the end of 2012, the 14in Alienware M14x will be your smallest choice in Dell’s gaming stable. This move is apparently due to gamers demanding large screens, full-size keyboards and optical drives (in which case one might be inclined to wonder why the little 11in beast sold so well).

Since Dell/Alienware was one of the few companies to offer such a petite gaming laptop, does this mean small gaming laptops as a category are now officially dead? Not necessarily. Intel’s integrated graphics are coming on in leaps and bounds lately, and AMD’s integrated GPU/APUs are even more impressive. So it might only be a year or two before we see the same level of gaming performance the M11x offered in even more minute X86 devices.

Bought one a few months ago. My gaming has moved to laptop since our baby was born, and I wanted something super portable. It has replaced my desktop, 17" laptop and consoles as my primary gaming device. OK the hardware isn't stellar, but the screen is small enough that it's more than usable. Will be sad to see it go.

Actually, I'll be reviewing an 11in gaming laptop with Kepler and Ivy Bridge soon, so maybe a new portable champion will arise to take its place :)
