Activision explains Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Share Play omission

Activision has hit back at claims that that it’s purposefully blocking Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare on Share Play, arguing that its dev team didn’t have a chance to test the new mode before the feature went live.

Share Play is a new PS4 feature added in the most recent update that allows two console owners to play the same game over an internet connection, even if only one player has the game.

Last week it emerged that players weren’t able to access the feature on Activision’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, sparking anger amongst players who’d been keen to use the new feature.

An Activision spokesperson revealed to TrustedReviews that the real reason behind the Share Play shut out was because its dev team is still working on trialling the feature.

“Share Play is a new feature that was introduced as part of the recent PS4 firmware 2.00 update,” the spokesperson told us. “Our engineers didn’t have access to it before it launched, so we haven’t had a chance to evaluate it to see how it will impact the experience across all modes of play.”

The spokesperson also revealed that Share Play functionality could be coming in the near future, should it get the thumbs-up from Activision engineers.

“Of course we wouldn’t include a feature in our game without having the chance to test it. Once we’ve fully analysed its performance, we’ll determine how to support it going forward,” Activision revealed.

Sony built a censorship option into Share Play for publishers who might want to block some gameplay being shared, largely to minimise spoiler leaks.

The block feature doesn’t have a cap on how much of the game can actually be shut off from Share Play, which allowed Activision to completely remove Share Play functionality on Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.

“Delivering a great gaming experience for fans is our top priority,” the Activision spokesperson told TrustedReviews. “We’re focused on launching Advanced Warfare and ensuring that people have a great time playing it, which our fans seem to be.”

We’ve reached out to Sony for comment on why Activision wasn’t given access to the feature for testing before the update went live, and we’ll update this article as soon as we know more.
