Call of Duty: Black Ops 3

Activision Blizzard has announced it is opening a new film and television studio that’ll see classic franchises like Call of Duty adapted for the screen.

The new studio will give the company full control over the cast of characters that have entered entertainment folklore over the last quarter of a century.

The idea, according to new studio co-president Nick van Dyk, is to replicate the success of Marvel, which has transitioned its canon of comic book heroes to TV and film.

"Activision Blizzard Studios has the unique advantage of starting with a library of world-class intellectual property that includes some of the largest franchises which have not yet been developed in film and television,” he said at BlizzCon, which commenced on Friday.

"Our library spans more than 30 years of global entertainment culture and, in the last 12 months alone, fans of Activision Blizzard properties have played and watched our games online for more than 13 billion hours."

While Call of Duty films are sure to pique the interest of millions of gamers around the world, the company has big plans for some of its other properties.

The first venture will be an adaptation of Skylanders, featuring voice talent from Justin Long, Ashley Tisdale, Jonathan Banks and Norm Macdonald.

The company already has one movie on the way. Warcraft is being produced by Legendary Pictures with the first teaser trailer expected later today.
