The latest news and reviews from Las Vegas: CES 2012 Special Report

Acer has entered the cloud computing world with the launch of the rather unimaginatively-titled AcerCloud at CES 2012.

John Princen, General Manager of Acer Cloud Technology, took to the stage at the press conference to show off the service which will come bundled with all Acer consumer PCs from Q2 in North America and China and worldwide in Q4 of this year.

The service promises anywhere, anytime access to your media (photos, music, films) and documents across a range of PCs, laptops, tablets and smartphones. And it's not just Acer tablets and smartphones which will be supported with the service supporting Android devices from launch and Windows devices soon after according to Acer.

While the service sounds a lot like Apple's iCloud, Princen said at the launch: "We are doing it a little differently" calling AcerCloud "a cloud that supports [consumers'] devices and solves one big problem for our users. People have a lot of personal content like photos and music and want access to all that content on all their devices, without any limits"

There will be three apps available: clear.fi photo, clear.fi media and AcerCloud Docs. clear.fi photo will automatically push photos taken on any device into the cloud and make them accessible through the PicStream folder on your PC almost immediately. Any editing or re-organising of photos done on your PC will also be reflected on your tablet or smartphone.

clear.fi media indexes all your content from your PC and pushes it into the cloud. When you then want to listen to some of your music stored on your PC you can simply press play on your smartphone and stream it. There will also be the option to download content for offline use.

Thanks to Acer's new Always Connect technology, even if your PC is in hibernation mode, you can still access it remotely. The amount of cloud storage available is essentially a mirror of the amount of storage available to you on your PC.

AcerCloud Docs is a similar product to Google Docs, letting you edit documents remotely and save to the cloud to continue to work on, on your PC when you get home. It will support Word, Excel and Power Point documents.
