Acer Updates Notebook Ranges With Santa Rosa

TravelMate for the businessmen, Aspire for the cool cats.

Acer yesterday officially announced its plans for the Santa Rosa platform with updates to its TravelMate and Aspire notebook ranges, the former targeted at the corporate world and the latter aimed at the consumer market. Both ranges have been completely re-designed, with a variety of form factors based upon common chassis.

The TravelMate range includes the 6592, a desktop replacement with a full-sized keyboard and a choice of 15 and 15.4in screens, the 6492, a mid-sized notebook with a 14in display, and the ultra-mobile 6292 (pictured) which will feature a 12.1in screen. There are also two SoHo (Small Office Home Office) notebooks in the 7720 and 5720.

All will come with a selection of Core 2 Duo processors and a choice of operating systems including Vista Business, Vista Home Premium, Home Basic and Windows XP Professional.

Rather more exciting is the Aspire range, which has seen a dramatic makeover based upon a “Gemstone” design concept. Based upon the Centrino Duo platform all Aspire notebooks are Dolby certified providing high quality audio production including Dolby Headphone – a very desirable addition for a notebook.

Selected models will also feature Robson flash memory technology, which Riyad wrote about in his Santa Rosa feature.

According to Acer, the flagship model will be the 5920 as seen above and below. It will feature a 15.4in display, an nVidia 8600M-GT with up to 512MB of memory, and Dolby Home Theatre sound. They’ll also be the option for an HD DVD drive, adding to the media functionality of the machine.

Other notebooks in the range include the 5720, with a 15.4in display, ATI graphics and Dolby Digital Live. The 7720 will have a 17in display, ATI graphics and Dolby Digital Live , and finally the 9920 with a massive 20in display, nVidia 8600M GT graphics, an HD DVD drive Dolby Home Theatre and up to 2GB of TurboCache memory. There’s even an option for a VoIP phone.

As usual it’s Core 2 Duo’s all round with the Aspire range, and with any luck we should be getting these in for review soon so look out for that.
