The engineers over at the Acer's laptop division have been pretty busy with Acer this week announcing updates for two of its most popular Aspire laptop lines.

First to get a bit of spit and polish is the slim TimelineX series, the previous version of which we looked at last year. The updated models have been upgraded with Sandy Bridge silicon and a dedicated Nvidia GeForce graphics card. One of the major upgrades is in battery life with Acer claiming up to 10 hours of battery life. The previous iteration of the TimelineX series boasted eight hours however during our testing we found that in reality it was more like five and a half – so we’ll have to wait and see if Acer has improved on this. There are three sizes available, the 13.1in 3830T, 14in 4830T, and 15.6in 5830T with 750GB HDD (there’s also an SSD option for those with cash to burn), a 1.3 megapixel HD webcam, HDMI, Bluetooth and USB 3.0 ports. The new TimelineX series will be available from 1 August and pricing and final specifications are still to be released.

Next up from Acer is the updated Aspire Ethos line, which was first seen last year in the form of the 18.4in, 4.6kg, scale-busting 8943G. Now Acer has added two more laptops to the Ethos line with the 8951G and 5951G. Both are powered by second-generation Intel Core processors, which boast Turbo Boost speeds of up to 3.4GHz. The larger 8951G is a 18.4in behemoth with a full HD display with 1920 x 1080 resolution while the 15.6in 5951G comes with a HD display boasting a resolution of 1366 x 768. Of a lot of interest is a detachable touchpad, which can be used as a remote for music, movies and pictures. Whether this is a gimmick or adds serious value to the laptop we’ll have to reserve judgement on until we get a unit in for review. There are HDD options up to 750GB as well as a Blu-ray drive option. You get both USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports, HDMI, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and an card reader. The Ethos line will set you back quite a bit though with prices starting from £999 when the models go on sale in the middle of June.
