Acer to launch fitness tracker in coming months?

Acer should launch its first fitness tracker in the coming months, according to a source “with direct knowledge of the matter”.

A fresh report from the Chinese media suggests that Acer will launch a fitness tracker rather than a smartwatch as its first wearable device.

Similar to other fitness tracker devices like the Fitbit Force, Jawbone UP24 or Nike Fuelband SE, the Acer devices will be able to pair with smartphones and tablets.

However, what is interesting is that the source suggests Acer is looking to partner with hospitals and/or health centres to build an ecosystem for its wearable devices rather than launch it is a standalone product.

The source reveals that Acer is looking to launch this device around the middle of 2014, however its annual spring press event in New York could be used to launch the company’s wearable line.

Back in January,  an Acer source suggested the company’s first wrist-worn device would be “distinctive” to set it apart from the crowd, but wouldn’t elaborate as to how it would be unique from the competition.

Speaking to TrustedReviews, Acer’s VP of Smartphone Business Group Allen Burnes revealed the company’s first wearables would be “very targeted”, before adding that smartwatches are “a harder wearables prospect” than other devices.

“You will see wearables coming out from us through the second half [of 2014] and they will be very targeted,” said Burnes. “The wearables space will also start interfacing differently with multiple products.”

Acer’s first wearable device will certainly have to be quite unique to break into the already densely packed wearable market, especially with a potential iWatch on the horizon and the recent success of the Samsung Gear Fit.
