The first 8-inch Windows 8 tablet may well have just leaked in the shape of the Acer Iconia W3.
French website Minimachines has published (and since removed, at Acer’s request) leaked images of the new device. It’s the first Windows 8 tablet we’ve seen that’s smaller than 10.1-inches.
The Acer Iconia W3 isn’t what you’d call a high-end device by any means, but seems pitched at the affordable compact tablet market currently occupied by the Android-powered Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire HD.
It comes with an 8-inch display, a 1.8GHz dual-core Intel Atom Z2760 processor, and 2GB of RAM. Also expect a dual-camera and speaker set-up. It’s possible that the Acer Iconia W3 could also come with a microSD slot.
The image also shows that the Acer Iconia W3 will have a nifty keyboard dock available to it, though apparently it can’t be used for charging the tablet.
The report claims that the Acer Iconia W3 will be out some time in August, which could well make it the very first small Windows 8 tablet on the market.
Microsoft’s Small Windows 8 Plans
Microsoft has recently confirmed – following numerous rumours – that it was pursuing and enabling smaller tablet form factors for its Windows 8 OS.
At its recent Q2 earnings call, the company confirmed that it was working with hardware manufacturers to produce “small touch devices powered by Windows.”
Prior to this, the company tweaked its hardware requirements to allow for a minimum screen resolution of 1024 x 768 – which is ideal for 7-inch displays.
