Acer Iconia B1-A71 affordable 7-inch Android tablet announced

Acer has unveiled the Acer Iconia B1-A71, a 7-inch Android Jelly Bean tablet which soundly trumps the Google Nexus 7 on price.

The Acer Iconia B1-A71 is a new compact tablet that’s “targeted at young or new users or families looking for an additional tablet for their children,” according to Acer. However, we’d say it’s an equally good bet for those looking to get on the tablet ladder with an established brand for minimal expense.

The biggest feature of the Acer Iconia B1-A71 is its price – at €119 it’s considerably cheaper than the  Google Nexus 7 model, which starts from €199.

So what do you get for your potentially sub-£100 price tag? The Acer Iconia B1-A71 will come with a 7-inch WSVGA display, which translates to a 1,024 x 600 resolution. This doesn’t quite offer the 720p sharpness of the Google Nexus 7, but then that £60 saving (potentially) had to come from somewhere.

Powering this display is a capable – though again not exactly cutting edge – 1.2GHz dual-core CPU from Mediatek. This should be enough to handle pretty much anything you can throw at it, from HD video to 3D games.

While it only comes with 8GB of storage, the Acer Iconia B1-A71 does benefit from a microSD slot. This means that unlike the Google Nexus 7, you can expand your storage by up to 32GB.

At 320 grams, it’s lighter than Google’s equivalent too. There’s no rear camera, but the Acer Iconia B1-A71 does come with a front-facing camera for video calls.

The Acer Iconia B1-A71 will be available in Europe mid-January.
