Acer has won the battle to be the first to market with an Ultrabook making the Aspire S3 available for sale this week.
The Aspire S3 will however only be available in the US and Canada this week with an SRP of $899 (£575). WE contacted Acer in the UK and it told us that the S3 will be coming towarss the end of October or beginning of November.
However of more interest, it has also provided us with pricing for a number of configurations in the UK. For an Aspire S3 with 4GB of RAM, 250GB hard drive, Core i5 processor clocked at 1.6GHz will set you back £699 including VAT. Boost that to Core i7 with a 500GB hard drive and you're looking at speeding £899 while adding a 250GB SSD combined with an i5 processor will set you back £1,099.
The Acer Aspire S is a 13.3in laptop with a magnesium and aluminium alloy chassis measuring between 13mm and 17mm thick. It weighs in at a shade under 1.4kg and comes with the usual array of Intel second generation Core processors.
While Acer will be happy to be the first Ultrabook to market, considering that the latest generation of MacBook Airs have been available for some time now, the effect of being the first is lessened somewhat.
However competition is always welcome and with Asus, Lenovo and Toshiba all set to join Acer within the next month, we will be looking forward to some competitive pricing as well as great performance and ultraportability.
