Acer and Victorinox team up to make smart straps for analogue watches

Victorinox’s analogue watches are about to get a lot smarter.

The Swiss Army Knife and watch company has signed a deal with Acer that will see the two collaborate on wearable technology for Victorinox’s I.N.O.X. watch collection.

The two didn’t come out and say it’s a smart strap, but we think it’s safe to infer that it is.

“Our first collaboration with Acer is a wearable device that makes your watch smart, giving it multi-functionality much like our iconic Swiss Army Knife,” Alexander Bennouna, CEO of Victorinox Swiss Army SA, said in a statement.

“Our partnership with Acer enables us to introduce a unique solution that combines the best of both worlds – an innovative wearable accessory that adds technology and functionality to an existing I.N.O.X. watch, without compromising its Swiss-made integrity and durability.”

In other words, a smart strap.

The device will be shown off at Mobile World Congress next week, along with a boatload of other wearables and mobile devices.

Acer and Victorinox aren’t the first firms to make a smart strap (though you would think so from reading the press release). Last year, Montblanc launched the e-Strap, which added smartwatch smarts to its analogue range. Pebble has also launched a selection of smart straps, including one that allows your watch to make contactless payments.
