A truly worthwhile Moto Mod is on the way for Moto Z owners

Google’s Project Tango augmented reality platform could be coming to the Moto Z handset via a Moto Mod hardware add-on.

The clip-on accessories, announced during the summer alongside the Moto Z, have so far failed to inspire, but the addition of Google’s room mapping technology could be a game changer.

Motorola President Aymar de Lencquesaing revealed the plans during a press event this week.

“Going forward, we’ll have to address as a group how do we reconcile the products that are at the fringe?” he said (via SlashGear).

“We’re likely to to have a Tango module to basically enable the Z to have Tango functionality,” answering his own question.

So far the only consumer available Project Tango phone is the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro, which finally went on sale at the beginning of this month.

It uses multiple cameras to enable room mapping capabilities that facilitate digital interaction within the real world.

At Lenovo’s summer showcase Google demonstrated a “Dinosaurs Among Us” app from the American Natural History Museum, which enables users to interact with dinosaurs, learn about them and view them in real size within an AR environment.

There was also a Dominoes game that enables players to set up dominoes in a real world environment without having to clean everything up afterwards.

The US hardware store Lowes also demonstrated an application that measures the dimensions of any room to help users see how items will look and fit within their home.
