ZuneHD / Project 'Pink' Launching In June

Updated: ZuneHD / Project 'Pink' Launching In June

Twitter, love or hate it there is no denying it's a great way to catch the latest news and gossip - and Microsoft has just started some...

The company's official Twitter profile for Office 2010 (less followers than TrustedReviews *cough*) let slip these little nuggets:

17 hours ago: "June 2009 will be an important month for Zune lovers."

Then just 6 hours ago in response to queries: "New product launch, that's all I'm allowed to say. Hold off from buying an iPhone/Pre. :)"

So numerous oddities here. Firstly, you'd think our slack jawed tweeter was talking about the ZuneHD but can an MP3 player really compete with a smartphone? Secondly, could it therefore have something to do with the secretive project Pink rumours and talk of a Microsoft LG built handset? Thirdly, if this is just more barking on about - from what we've seen so far - the quite frankly rubbish Windows Phone OS we'll be rather narked. Fourthly, if these tweets weren't deliberate viral marketing then why hasn't Microsoft removed them?

On the bright side, the Office 2010 'movie' does a lovely job of lampooning the 300 and Watchmen trailers.

Whatever the nitty gritty of all this one thing is certain: Pre, third generation iPhone at WWDC, Nokia's Ovi Store launch plus whatever Microsoft has cooked up are all on course for June.

Looks like I'll be needing a new keyboard come July...

Update: Microsoft is disputing the tweets but barely did it get to the end of its sentence before ZDNet claims to have now got minimum specifications for 'Pink series' smartphones:

  • 3.5in multitouch display or larger

  • ARM v6+ processors and OpenGL ES 2.0-compatible graphics

  • 256MB or more of RAM

  • 1GB or more of storage

  • Minimum 3 megapixel camera

  • GPS

  • WiFi

  • Bluetooth (no type listed)

  • Digital compass (
  • told you)

  • Accelerometer

  • 3.5mm headphone jack

  • nVidia's Tegra platform is also mooted along with TI's OMAP 3 platform
Should the list be true it looks like Microsoft just learnt how to make a smartphone! We'll be watching this space - like hawks with binoculars.

Do you actually know that it is in fact "The company's official Twitter profile for Office 2010" - or is this just media hearsay to beef up the story?

Call me cynical, but personally I think one of two less interesting scenarios are far more likely:

a) Somebody wanted to draw attention to their video (possibly still a MS employee), so opened a Twitter account, which nobody noticed... hmm, how can I get people to look at my Twitter post... low and behold they've gained over 600 followers since talking about a product release in June. Seems to work, because you watched the video and I did this morning as well.

b) Somebody at NeoWin wanted to draw attention to their Project Pink coverage. NeoWin apparently published a the story based on comments on this obscure Twitter account less than an hour after it was posted. Check out the time of the first comment on their article.

There's a lot more on Pink now...

This particular thing was apparently a hoax, but there are now details about what pink is...
