Zune Pass Coming to the UK?

Zune Pass Coming to the UK?

It seems that Microsoft is readying the Zune store for the UK market. A page offering Zune Pass subscriptions in pounds sterling is now live with a one month pass coming in at £8.99, and three months at £26.97.

The Zune store is Microsoft’s iTunes equivalent, offering music and movie downloads, but also offers streaming over WiFi. However, like the Zune itself, it never made it beyond US shores.

For the UK variant you won’t be able to stream music yet, but a Zune Pass will let you download as many songs as you want and though they are DRMed, you can play them as long as your subscription is active.

Whether this means that Microsoft is planning on finally bringing the Zune device itself to the UK is unclear, though at this juncture it seems unlikely. However, the Zune will be part and parcel of the Windows Phone 7 platform, much as every iPhone integrates an iPod, so would seem a major drawback for the phone platform if the Zune ecosystem remained US only.

Even before Windows Phone 7 arrives, the Zune Pass content could be accessed via the Xbox Live, so the arrival of the Zune Pass to the UK will be appreciated by many.

Goodbye to my Spotify unlimited sub if so. Been waiting to use this on my Zune80 for yonks, the marketplace playlists should really help with music discovery too which is useful as I write a little music blog. Just a proper bummer that it still doesn't scrobble.

So do the tracks come in 320kbps MP3 format or similar? If not I doubt it will be replacing my Spotify Premium subsciption.

What is the Zune library like? I had a quick look (about 2 minutes) and couldnt immediately see anything.

I wont be ditching Spotify any time soon. It needs some improvements but it is interesting that there could be an alternative to the iPhone/Android set up for me in 12 months time - ie. a windows 7 phone with pressumably Zune integration.

I really can't wait for this. I currently have been using the marketplace on the Zune software by a sneaky route. Changing my computer location from United Kingdom To United States under 'Regional Options' and purchasing MS Live points from the US via ebay. Hands down the Zune software is far more 'eye candy' than iTunes (Which I believe was once referred to as an excel spreadsheet in terms of looks)
