Zune Pass Coming to the UK?

Zune Pass Coming to the UK?

It seems that Microsoft is readying the Zune store for the UK market. A page offering Zune Pass subscriptions in pounds sterling is now live with a one month pass coming in at £8.99, and three months at £26.97.

The Zune store is Microsoft’s iTunes equivalent, offering music and movie downloads, but also offers streaming over WiFi. However, like the Zune itself, it never made it beyond US shores.

For the UK variant you won’t be able to stream music yet, but a Zune Pass will let you download as many songs as you want and though they are DRMed, you can play them as long as your subscription is active.

Whether this means that Microsoft is planning on finally bringing the Zune device itself to the UK is unclear, though at this juncture it seems unlikely. However, the Zune will be part and parcel of the Windows Phone 7 platform, much as every iPhone integrates an iPod, so would seem a major drawback for the phone platform if the Zune ecosystem remained US only.

Even before Windows Phone 7 arrives, the Zune Pass content could be accessed via the Xbox Live, so the arrival of the Zune Pass to the UK will be appreciated by many.
