ZTE Skate Brings You 4.3in Of Android Goodness

There is no doubt but ZTE is on the up. Not only did it strike the perfect balance between price and performance with its San Francisco model last year, it also jumped into fourth spot of mobile phone vendors globally.

Now however, it is hoping to build on that success with its latest Android model, the 4.3in Gingerbread-running ZTE Skate. Announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the Skate will be ZTE’s flagship model but despite the company’s plans to break into North America, reports are suggesting this model won’t be heading in that direction. The Skate is the first device that comes under ZTE’s “Light Your Smart World" strategy which will see a range tablets, internet boxes and smartphones launched this year.

The ZTE Skate was apparently inspired by the skateboard and despite it’s 4.3in screen weighs only 120g – compared to 164g that the similarly sized HTC Desire HD weighed in at. The Skate is powered by an unnamed 800MHz processor and the Adreno 200 GPU, which are not the most awe-inspiring of specs considering we live in the world of dual-core 1GHz superphones. The Skate has a 5 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, A-GPS and Wi-Fi.

The Skate will be available in certain markets around the globe in May of 2011 however no word on pricing has been revealed yet. We will obviously be hoping that the Skate will follow the San Francisco down the budget line as the specs don’t exactly scream premium to us but we will have to wait and see.

If they get the pricing right, they could be onto a winner here. OK, might not have the best specs in terms of CPU and GPU, but neither does the San francisco, but I own one of those and I absolutely love it. I would definitely consider upgrading to this if the price is right, and if the screen is as good as the AMOLED San Francisco.

TR, what is going on with this mobile phone/tablet focus? TR used to focus quite broadly on technology, but only one new item on the homepage isn't about tablets or mobile phones. I know I don't pay for this site but it is starting to get just a little bit drawn out...where are the motherboards, the cpus, the computers, the hi-fi separates? It's just mobiles, tablets, mobiles, tablets, mobiles, tablets...

Coupled with the annoying adverts all over the place..

I only moan because I miss how TR used to be..

@Michael G The homepage is full of tablets and mobile phones because Mobile World Congress is on at the moment and there has been a huge number of tablets and phones announced. We do cover all other news it's just at the moment the major news is in these two areas. It finishes tomorrow so things should start getting back to normal.

@Michael G CPU and motherboards reviews? Looking at the site there hasn't been a CPU review in over a year and a motherboard review in over 6 months.

Sorry that wasn't me trying to be rude or ungrateful - I guess I just remember the days when the site had a bigger focus on computer hardware. Still excellent journalism though :)
