Xbox 360 Gets HD DVD Drive

As predictably as rain follows sun (in England), an ATI announcement follows an nVidia one or someone from Blu-ray chirps up after news on HD DVD, Microsoft is making some noise about the Xbox 360 just after Sony splurged date and pricing details on the PS3.

Ironically, the announcement brings multiple enemies together with Microsoft finally confirming an official HD DVD drive will made available for its next gen console (Sony’s PS3, of course, uses Blu-ray).

In an official statement, Gates’ minions effused:

This much anticipated accessory carries with it an extension of the HD Era that Xbox 360 offers, and provides the most visually stunning movie watching experience available.

This new accessory will connect to the Xbox 360 console with a USB cable, enabling it to harness the power of the Xbox 360 console for the HD video outputs and digital surround sound. As an accessory, it becomes another shining example of the flexibility of Xbox 360 designed into the console in order to grow and add new features.

It then goes into a predictably lopsided diatribe about why HD DVD is better than Blu-ray. Cost and superior compatibility are the main arguments formulated despite the fact all Blu-ray players will also support DVDs and at no point does Microsoft mention Blu-ray’s vastly superior storage capacity. I’m not promoting either side here, just saying if you’re going to advertise to an already confused public at least play it straight…

Anyway, other than revealing a drive is coming little else was revealed. No piccies (now we've got em!), no RRP, but after the Blu-ray price rant on the company’s Xbox 360 site it better be CHEAP!
