In February prices for the Xbox 360 Core began tumbling just as stock of the basic edition began to slip from shelves. Five months later could a sudden drop in the price of the Xbox 360 Premium suggest the Elite is finally on its way?
We could be jumping the gun on this one but thanks goes to regular reader Iain who mailed us to point out that Play.com has suddenly hacked a whopping fifty quid off its asking price for the Premium making it just £229.99 (incl. VAT).
Now given that consoles are always sold at a loss in order to hook customers into the more profitable games they are rarely available with any discounts – certainly never more than a few pounds, as there simply isn't the margin to do so. But now is there?
Any shift from Microsoft to discount its flagship model to customers suggests it is making room in its top end for a new pretender: the Elite, launched more than three months ago in the US and notable by its absence from European shelves. Coming with an enlarged 120GB HDD, HDMI port (with bundled cable) and new black styling the Elite could be the machine Microsoft feels it needs to head off Sony's impending PS3 price cuts.
Either that or we've jumped the gun...
