Hackers, you can almost set your watch by them. Games: cracked the same day. Applications: cracked the same week. New hardware: cracked the same month. And they seem to be right on schedule with the Xbox 360.
Team PI Coder, a Dutch hacker group, has posted information revealing it has learnt how to extract the data from Xbox 360 games and recreate the file system. A tool has consequently been coded to do this automatically and it can now be downloaded from all over the web, but so far no one has been able to make the copied discs run.
The team said, however, that this breakthrough suggests no physical hardware modifications will need to be made to the next gen console get it to run pirated software (a so-called ‘soft mod’). This differs from the PS2, which had to be ‘chipped’. So although there is still some way to go, the fact that hackers have gotten half way in a matter of weeks implies we won’t be waiting much longer before dodgy looking guys in Soho are trying to sell us tatty copies of Project Dark Zero out the back of a dirty white van.
This is either a good development or bad one, depending on your opinion of piracy, dodgy looking guys and dirty white vans…
