Windows Mobile 6.1 Pictured & Detailed

While some lucky US journos got a sneak peak at the latest revamped edition of Windows Mobile last week, pictures and details have now come flooding out. You know what? They weren't so lucky...

'Windows Mobile 6.1' is the rather uninspiring and incremental name given to the update and sadly - despite a cartoony makeover - it isn't really the revolution we were (perhaps foolishly) expecting.

Instead we learn from BoyGenius (which garnered the grabs above) that the main highlights are:

*Domain Enroll in Settings (Enrolling in a domain will connect your device with company resources.)
*New home screen (pan left and right to check out missed calls, notifications like email, sms, etc.)
*Change Master Security Code
*Added text input settings
*Recent Programs when pressing Start menu
*Threaded SMS
*When you compose an email, or SMS, and start typing the name of the contact in the "To:" field, the contact names finally pop up like Windows Mobile Professional
*Internet Explorer now lets you define a homepage and also zoom in and out using a nice and clean interface

A useful lot, though certainly the term 'necessary' rather an 'inspired' comes to mind and a usable virtual keyboard should've been on that list. Furthermore there remains no word whether this is will an option for all existing WM6 users. Handset manufacturers usually decide this, but it would seem a bit unfair if not.

Still, I will be interested to see the latest 'zoomable' IE since the only justification for the seeming demise of its once-promising Deepfish browser would be if the project's hard work ended up here. BoyGenius also reports that copy and paste is a highly welcome addition - but I had this way back on my Vario II which ran WM5.

All in all a step forward, but we will expect far greater things come Windows Mobile 7…
