White iPhone 4 Officially Delayed Until Later This Year

White iPhone 4 Officially Delayed Until Later This Year

Apple has issued a statement that confirms that the white iPhone 4 will not be available until later this year.

This contradicts Steve Jobs statement at last week’s iPhone 4 conference that it would ship before the end of July.

The statement simply reads:

“White models of Apple’s new iPhone 4 have continued to be more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected, and as a result they will not be available until later this year. The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected.”

Apple is clearly giving nothing away as to the exact cause but earlier this week we reported on suggestions that a supplier was having trouble producing the right paint thickness and opacity for the white iPhone 4.

This latest incident marks another incident in what could be described as an ‘launchus horribilis’ for Apple, at least if one wanted to mangle a well-known Latin phrase.

Highlights include:

• A prototype iPhone 4 is lost by an Apple engineer and turns up on gadget website Gizmodo.

• Aerialgate - shortly after the handset goes on sale users report dropped calls and discolouration issues on the Retina display.

• Jobs allegedly replies to an email send to him regarding iPhone reception issues by telling the owner that he is ‘holding it wrong’.

• Apple announces that it has miscalculated the algorithm for how it displays the signal bars.

• Rumours abound that Apple is to issue an iPhone 4 recall

• Apple announces an emergency press conference for 16 July regarding the iPhone – Jobs announces free cases for every iPhone 4 owner.

What else could go wrong now for Apple and the iPhone 4?

Predictions on a postcard please, - or in the comments below. Have fun.

millions of people around the world will have the following epiphany: "hang on, this little black thing doesn't make me cool...I'm still a sad lonely gimp, only now I'm a sad lonely gimp who's been taken for several hundred quid more than I would pay for any other smartphone. and even after I've paid my money, I still can't install whatever I like on it in case an app says something rude or does something that something else does, and I'm insulted by people who think I won't spot that changing background wallpaper does not consititute a "feature". holyshit, what's happening to my signal strength?..."

Go on then .. I'll say it

White phones look deeply naff and very 90's anyway ...

In fact the only electrical items that should be white are dish washers, washing machines and other domestic appliances .. you wouldn't want someone to think you were holding a fridge to your ear now would you :)

I wonder if O2 will extend their upgrade early offer to cater for users wanting to purchase the white iphone? I sincerely hope so

I wonder if they're using it to offset some potential WP7 sales. It's possible I guess

Wot, no (new) Case Replacement story yet?!

Tut, tut Trusted... :D

July 23, 2010, 8:48 pm

Black is the new white anyway...

Then again, I can see a market for all the girly-girls who'll cover this thing in a pink bumper.

The white iPhone looks horrible. Black looks far better.

@sinaplenty - When you had your lobotomy did it hurt?

July 23, 2010, 9:49 pm

It could be an indication that entire production line of iPhone 4 (black included) is going through modification to apply some form of insulation layer on the steel frame. Also during the recent press conference Apple didn't properly explain the 30 September time-limit for free bumper offer.

I can see the very first response by the consumer right now. "Hmm. The edge of my white iPhone feels quite rough. What is that?"

July 23, 2010, 10:57 pm

The date is wrong in the article, the emergency Press Conf was in July, not in June...

July 23, 2010, 11:14 pm

Maybe they want to try and get it almost right this time ....

This is 'news' in the most teneous way..
