White iPhone 4 Now Delayed Till Spring 2011

White iPhone 4 Now Delayed Till Spring 2011

Apple has announced that the white edition of the iPhone 4 will be delayed yet again, and now won’t be available till spring 2011.

The now mythical white device was meant to originally be available shortly after the launch of the iPhone 4, and we even reported that Carphone Warehouse had them in stock.

Then at the infamous ‘Antennagate’ Friday press conference, Steve Jobs himself said that it would be available by the end of July.

Apple then released a statement that it would not be available until “later this year”.

Now, it’s been and gone and delayed it yet again, leading to much speculation as to the reasons why, even from sources such as Reuters, ranging from continuing issues with colour matching, to the white glass causing photos to wash out, to delaying it until it can solve the antenna issues.

Either way, it is looking like becoming a white unicorn-like mythical beast. Rumours that when it does arrive it will ship with a copy of Duke Nukem Forever preinstalled remain unsubstantiated.

Hmmm, so maybe the rumours that the Gran Turismo 5 dev team are also working on the White iPhone aren't far off the mark!

I don't think the Duke Nukem Forever rumour is true - it would have to be played in landscape format, and that would mean holding the phone the still-not-quite-right way. Instead, I hear it will come with Angry Birds 2: Birds On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown.

It will be interesting to see what Apple (and their customers) do now. If the white iPhone comes out in Spring, and traditionally the new iPhone comes out in June, then only the most hardened Apple Fan would be silly enough to get a white iPhone 4 two months before the new model comes out (probably at the same price range as well).

Its still amazing tho that even with all of the bad publicity that this version of the iPhone seems to be selling really well still. Just goes to show that the brand name and the usability of the phone must be really good

"it will ship with a copy of Duke Nukem Forever"

Don't you mean they are "really excited to announce a magical new iFPS shootTime environment featuring the incredible new Duke Nukem Forever"?

Does anyone really care??

I still remember that nobody wanted the 3GS in white - they only got it when the black one was out of stock.

I reckon this is just a stunt to build up demand.

@Stelph - fortunately, for most folks the only thing bad about iPhone 4 is... the publicity.

Apparently, against all the odds, my unit has unscratched glass, experiences no signal attenuation / dropped calls, no issues with the proximity sensor.

It is an absolute joy to use, fast, responsive and fun - plus the iOS ecosystem is so full of great apps that few real barriers exist to being able to do almost anything without the need for jailbreaking.

I suspect they will continue the iPhone 4 as the replacement for the 3GS as the budget model... so they will possibly need a white variant. Also Im sure companies that are manufacturing the white iPhone for Apple are all tooled up and they can't cancel it now.

Having said all this, I must say that the design team at Apple should definitely not be lauded for this phone anymore... far too many problems (yet as mentioned before continues to sell well). Funny how it can be released with so many design flaws but a aesthetic flaw holds it back completely.

Maybe they should just market it as a eggshell coloured variant ;)

@Greg (and all) : FFS, its only a bleedin colour! I'm with KultiVator on this, yes there were a few glitches with the proximity sensor, but the antenna thing really was (and I'm not overestimating this here people) bollox. I'm sure its the same with most other phones on the market, after nearly 20 years of widely available non-brick shaped mobile handsets - it drops less calls than any phone I've used. Mind you, Vodafone and iPhone 4 together was eons ahead of O2 and iPhone 3G.

I just came to say: ROFL.

Carry on.

@Jim: It actually wasn't bollocks.

No problems with reception on my iPhone4 here in the UK - has consistently performed better than my old 3G in every way.

Think the media's anti-hype for iPhone 4 is almost as silly as the positive hype that Apple's marketing dept creates!

@drdark: P.S.@Jim: It actually wasn't bollocks.

Yeah that's right. -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

@Keith: Oh well done, you've learnt to use YouTube.

Who said Apple users couldn't think for themselves?

I would be rather surprised if Apple had delayed the launch of the white version of iPhone4 solely because of this alleged colour issue - the production company in China couldn't fix it by now? It is also a bit strange in context with (as has already been pointed out) the company's normal release cycle. I have a feeling that there is more to it - what that might be though, positive or negative, I have no idea.
