Amongst the craziness of CES something a little more mundane nearly slipped through: a new Sony Ericsson Walkman phone.
Of course the initial Walkman phone was major news: the first major attempt from a famous brand to merge two successful formats. It did it well, so well in fact, that every new release afterwards has seemed rather boring by comparison.
So it is again with the W810i. Like the W800i it has a two megapixel camera with autofocus, 176 x 220 pixel screen, Bluetooth, USB2.0, FM radio and a speakerphone. Nice, but sooo last year. The additions are far more evolutionary than revolutionary: Quad band GSM plus EDGE, 20MB of memory (actually less than the W800i, though it still ships with a 512MB Memory Stick Duo card), dedicated music buttons on the D-Pad and no lens cover for the camera.
Quad band GSM plus EDGE is probably the most welcome addition for the regular pond hopper, but otherwise those of you with the W800i probably aren’t too envious of the new model. Needless to say, if you were thinking of buying a W800i but haven’t yet made it to the counter then wait (its due early in Q1), but don’t get too excited in the meantime.
