Joining the speed freaks party is Western Digital which has announced the extreme 'VelociRaptor', a 300GB, 10,000rpm SATA 2.5in performance drive - a model WD claims offers a mammoth 35 per cent performance increase over previous Raptors.
This boils down to a pretty remarkable 120MBps sustained data transfer rate, though WD surprisingly doesn't choose to quote the access times. Still, we do know the VelociRapter series comes equipped with 16MB of cache and a 3.5in mounting frame which contains a built-in heat sink to keep the drive nice and cool. WD also boasts the line offers a 1.4m hours MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure) - the highest for a moving part drive in the industry.
Most welcome of all however is the price with WD quoting a £250 RRP - something of a score considering its extreme target market and the circa £500 pricing of similar rival products.
Now if only we could stuff it into a laptop...
