WD Launches Dual Drive 'Mirror' Backup Systems

LaCie may have made us all hot under the collar with its 1TB Little Big Disk earlier this week, but for serious storage monsters Western Digital's latest will probably hold even greater appeal...

The ‘My Book Mirror Edition' comes in 1TB and 2TB capacities but is a dual drive RAID-based system, so essentially you're talking about two HDDs for those ultra concerned about data loss. Continuous incremental backup is in there too meaning changes are monitored in real time and a choice of specific data (photos, music, video, etc) or the entire drive(s) can be stored.

In terms of everyday use ‘GreenPower' technology is used behind the scenes with WD claiming this results in a one third power saving compared to rival solutions and "whisper quiet operation". Intelligent power management also means automatic power-up, shutdown and backups are available in addition to any user defined schedules providing a fire and forget approach.

"Personal and business content is extremely valuable - both emotionally and financially," said Jim Welsh, Western Digital's Vice President and General Manager of Branded Products and Consumer Electronics Groups (a title so long he could probably do with backing it up). "Our new My Book Mirror system helps users sleep easy, knowing that their data is safe."

The drives go on sale immediately and come with three year warranties. 1TB and 2TB options will cost a very reasonable £169.99 and £309.99 respectively so the paranoid and conspiratorial should find it well within their alien-research taxed wages.

Just remember one thing: They're coming for you through the walls...
