Vodafone Lands Nokia 5800 Exclusive Edition

So do we have something to lift you out your seats, brave the cold and charge down to your local hightstreet? Well yes, if you really, really like blue...

Vodafone has announced an exclusive deal with Nokia to sell a blue edition of the recently released 5800 XpressMusic handset. We had no idea blue wasn't already available since blue, red and black variants were all featured liberally in press photography (see below) but there you go.

As for the incidentals, well you'll need at least a £25pm 18 month contact but three months free access to Sky TV's mobile channels will be provided. Nokia also recently confirmed the 5800 has been a sales success shipping over one million units in its first month.

If you don't Know your 5800 stats these are the highlights: a 3.2in LCD with tasty 640 x 360 native resolution, HSDPA, aGPS, WiFi and 3.2MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics. Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP is also welcome along with a 3.5mm headphone jack and up to nine hours of talk time. The 5800 is a chunky thing though at 15.5mm and you'll be needing to make use of its microSD expansion slot given the paltry 81MB of native memory.

All in all it's not bad for a midranger and Nokia clearly hasn't been overly ambitious with its first touchscreen entry instead wisely looking to get the basics right. My brief hands-on suggests the interface is no iPhone killer, but that's not really the point. It's a tidy little handset and - vitally - now in blue...!

a colour that would match perfectly with vodafone's primarily red colour scheme

but wait, isn't voda's corporate colour red? So Nokia pulled a fast one on Voda, selling them some different coloured plastic?

Actually Vodafone chose the blue colour, Nokia offered them red and they refused it! - I know this as my partner works at Vodafone HQ. Apparently they are really fussy about using red unless it is the exact shade of their corperate colours.- I know, crazy and none of the staff outside of the marketing department can figure it out!

@all - great spot.

@Ben - hilarious. It's like Labour wearing blue ties unless it exactly matches the shade of the crest. Brilliant.

There are few things as important in the tech industry as colour coordination.

Got mine from Mobile Phones Direct, Nokia UK&#8217s retail partner according to their website. They&#8217re offering the 5800 Touch screen in blue AND red for connection or upgrade to Vodafone or T-Mobile at &#16315pm (with no silly cash backs you need to claim to get to that line rental price) or SIM Free at &#163249.99. Got mine delivered next day, in Vodafone red and on Vodafone! The Red being a very dark and tasteful crimson red and the better colour in my opinion.... Unless you like blue, or support Chelsea!
