Wanted a 3G data card, but didn’t want the 12 month contract? Well you may think your luck is in, since Vodafone has just brought out the UK’s first prepay offering…
Unfortunately, the result is both a blessing and a curse because while customers will be footloose and fancy free under the new pay-as-you-go scheme, those feet will likely end up in irons for stealing the numerous cars and selling the large quantities of crack cocaine required to afford the data rates.
Usage will be charged at £3.07 per megabyte. I’ll give you time to get up off the floor and splash yourself with water. That’s right, £3.07 PER MEGABYTE (those “humorous” office PowerPoint attachments will be truly hilarious if you accidentally download one over this). Furthermore, downloading one megabyte abroad will cost £9.085!!! Throw in the £199 base cost for the card itself (which, incidentally, is US compatible) and I’ve never felt so motivated to find a Wi-Fi hotspot.
Those of you on the distant side of crazy will be able to pick these new PAYG 3G data cards and prepay vouchers up immediately from Vodafone outlets and most large electronics stores. (I think I just heard a pin drop during the stampede).
We just discovered all prices quoted here are EXCLUSIVE of VAT. Who thought up these costs? Paris Hilton!
Our roving editor (and I say this in the most literal of ways) is an owner and big fan of the Vodafone 3G card, but he has this warning: The Mobile Connect 75 package (the one is recommends) costs just £23.50 including VAT per month. To download the same amount of data on prepay would cost £270.54, while abroad it would come to £873.19. Still so scared of those 12 month contracts...?
