We had nothing against Virgin's Lobster TV mobile phone, but now it, the broadcasts it makes and BT's 'Movio' service which provided them are set to be axed.
The decision was made by Virgin and is likely to have been influenced as much by the EC's decision to standardise DVB-H as poor sales. As it's only customer, BT's Movio has also been forced to bite the dust.
In a statement a BT spokesperson confirmed: "BT is discussing the timescale for the closure of the service with Virgin Mobile. While the feedback from users on the service has been complimentary, Movio sales have been slower than originally expected mainly due to a lack of compatible devices from the big brands."
BT isn't kidding, Lobster was the only handset on the market to use its TV over DAB technology with Branson's boys (and presumably the rest of the market) now set to throw its weight behind DVB-H.
Expect an official announcement from both BT and Virgin soon claiming an early to mid 2008 timeframe for the technology's withdrawal. Expect Virgin to announce a replacement DVB-H service at exactly the same time...
