Virgin Completes HD Terrestrial Line-Up With Five HD

The headline says it all, but that makes it no less of a big deal for Virgin Media as it has now matched Sky by completing its terrestrial HD line-up.

Much like Sky, Virgin has done this by finalising an agreement for Five HD and the channel goes live today and is available to all customers for no additional fee.

Five HD will be on channel 150 and joins Fiver (151), Fiver +1 (152), Five USA (153) and Five USA +1 (154) in a nicely logical Sky-you-could-learn-from-this channel grouping. And yes I know what you're all thinking: High Def Neighbours and Home & Away! Yes, indeed along with The Mentalist, Grey’s Anatomy, Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Sports fans get Cricket on Five and Europa League football.

Virgin now has BBC HD, ITV HD, STV (in Scotland), Channel 4 HD and Five HD in every one of its TV packages for those with a V HD or V+ HD digibox and expands the broadcaster's HD channel line-up to 13. This is still some way of Sky's circa 50, but with Virgin's on-demand service offering a huge selection of TV and films at your fingertips plus BBC iPlayer integration and Sky Anytime Plus still some months away, heads could be swayed.

Especially if you are planning to bundle it with a 50Mbit broadband service...

Also FilmFour will be launching as a Virgin exclusive on 20th July. Okay, it's not quite 50 HD channels, but it wasn't that long ago that VM only had BBC HD as it's sole HD channel. Back then, I never thought us VM customers would one day get almost 14 HD channels. Hopefully, we'll get a few more before the year is out.

cushy91: freesat HD is looking more and more like a turkey every day. I know it is subscription free but it is also practically HD free! I'm starting to resent my Humax freesat+ box :(

@Joe I got a humax hdr box about 3 or 4 weeks ago for the bedroom and love it but the channel line up is definitely lacking. Freeview reception is almost non existent where I live and I do have sky downstairs but just SD. Freesat would definitely be better if it had channel 4's HD line up and the upcoming filmfour hd but again no freesat love :(

From what i've gathered freesat is unfortunatly screwed. They are sharing the sat with Sky but they can't increase the capacity without changing the frequency, which in turn means coverage area. Unfortunatly the coverage area then covers non-UK locations, and the suppliers aren't going to allow the host the channels if thats the case.

And because Sky is the monopoly they wont allow freesat to make the changes. So its down to Ofcom to force Sky to give freesat the space...otherwise its dead, and we'll be left with low bitrate over compressed hd from freeview.
