I remember a time when 24in LCDs were exclusive, high end products that only the exceedingly rich could afford... thankfully technology advanced however and now we can all have one!

The latest manufacturer to dive headlong into this newly accessible segment is ViewSonic and it's 'VX2435wm' ticks all the right boxes. As with every 24 incher it offers a 1080p friendly native resolution of 1920 x 1200 and improves from there with a dedicated HDMI port with HDCP enabling playback of the latest Blu-ray and HD DVD discs without any copy protection issues (important if you don't want to just circumvent it).

The VX2435wm also keeps up appearances with an oh-so-trendy-right-now glossy piano black finish while the visuals inside the bezel should be as impressive as they are outside given the 8ms response time and 500cd/m2 brightness. For what it's worth (which is virtually nothing since it is so hard to objectively quantify) the contrast ratio is lower than some we've seen at 1000:1.

With a wide viewing angle of 176 degrees the VX2435wm is audience friendly and it should play nice with all your legacy peripherals with component, S-video, composite and VGA ports backing up the HDMI show stealer.

Arriving this month with a £534 RRP ViewSonic's latest is very competitively priced so if you haven't splashed out (considerably more?) on a widescreen LCD by now (and why not, have you been living in the dark ages?) the VX2435wm should do you very nicely indeed...
