Velocity is gaining... well, you know.
Just two weeks since it unveiled the touchscreen 103 the ambitious company has come up with the '83', a sleek candybar handset that will bring some much needed style to the midrange smartphone market.
Housing a 2.8in touchscreen QVGA display, the 83 measures just 112 x 59.5 x 12.1mm and weighs 103g making it one of the skinnest Windows Mobile based phones to date and with WiFi onboard it will happily work with the company's key differentiator: Velocity Over The Air. VOTA - as it is more commonly known - delivers software updates to the handset wirelessly meaning users need not plug their handsets into a PC to obtain the latest patches, bug and security fixes.
Aside from this 3G is somewhat sadly missing while a 2MP camera doesn't exactly reinvent the wheel. That said, there is space for dual microSD card slots allowing the rather measly 128MB of internal memory to be heavily augmented and there's also GPS and Bluetooth with A2DP. Talk time is fairly standard at up to 4 hours while standby is a potential eight days, though expect to achieve this figure with both WiFi and Bluetooth switched off for the duration.
The Velocity 83 is scheduled for a November release when it will go on sale sim free for somewhere in the £250-300 region. For those looking for something a bit different it is worth keeping an eye on.
