So you're sitting down with your new iPhone and I'm sure you're feeling a) pleased, b) brassic and c) tempted by Shure's latest masterstoke: the MPA. So what if you could magnify a) minimise becoming further b) while getting all the functionality of c)...
To this end you have the ever innovative site usbfever to thank once again since it has come up with a far cheaper version of the MPA.
The 'iPhone Stereo Handsfree' cable is the slightly more literal name given to usbfever's take, but it does just the same thing: provide a seemless way to transfer from listening to music/watching videos to speaking in voice calls through an existing pair of headphones.
As such the iSH (my acronym) cable has a slim 3.5mm plug (capable of accessing the iPhone's daftly recessed socket) on one end and a mic with spring loaded clip and 3.5mm jack on the other. There are also separate volume controls and a button for answering/ending calls.
At 92cm, the iSH is probably a bit too long (especially when combined with a pair of headphones - though, notably, the MPA is too) and it doesn't come with all Shure's fancy proprietary acoustic tech but it will get the job done and at just $14.99 (less than £8) it is under one fifth of the price of the MPA. Appealing...? I'd say so.
Of course should you just want a straight iPhone earphone adaptor usbfever flogs them for just $6.99 (£3.50) a piece.
Imitation. Sometimes it really is the best form of flattery...
Update: Usbfever is running a crazy sale right now with items such as the $0.01 microSD card reader. Go check it out if you know what is good for your wallets ;)
