Upgrading Eee PC Does Not Void Warranty

Hopefully by now you've read our Asus Eee PC review and possibly even bought one. If you have succumbed to temptation (or necessity) you may be one of several owners who recently decided to upgrade the supplied 512MB RAM to a more usable amount only to be greeted by a warning label informing you that opening the RAM slot constitutes a warranty violation. Fortunately, Asus has released a statement explaining that this is a mistake and that upgrading the Eee PC is not a warranty voiding act.

The pertinent part of the press release reads thusly:

"ASUS wishes to assure its customers that merely breaking or removing this kind of seal will not void the ASUS Limited Warranty. Although ASUS recommends that customers use ASUS-approved service facilities and components, ASUS is committed to honoring the terms of its Limited Warranty and making sure that its customers are free to make appropriate hardware and software modifications and upgrades, regardless of whether the service is performed by an approved facility, a non-approved service provider, or by the customers themselves. ASUS will replace the warranty label with a label to warn users that ASUS will not be responsible for the damage caused by improper hardware change."

Instead of the current warning label, future Eee PCs will simply advise users that you should only upgrade the system yourself if you know what you're doing, or words to that effect, and that Asus will not be responsible for damage caused by the user in the process of upgrading. In other words, as long as you don't slip with a screwdriver and put a hole through the motherboard, or static the system to death, any broken, upgraded, machine will be replaced. So, what are you waiting for? Go and grab some more RAM.
