Wander over to Korea and you’ll find ludicrous 10 megapixel mobiles but back in Blighty we just got hot and bothered about a 3.2MPer. So imagine our moist excitement to find current industry overachiever LG will ship the UK’s first 5MP camera phone next month.
Called the KG920, it is a candy bar twister which backs up its impressive resolution packing digicam with autofocus technology and an integrated LED flash. There’s still no optical zoom (just 4x digital) which means you’ll need to stand near your subjects for best results but a sports mode should enable action shots – friends falling over, girlfriends slapping you, projectile vomit – to come out well for the first time on a British mobile.
Stepping away from this flagship feature the KG920 is competent rather than groundbreaking. It measures a reasonably trim 108 x 50 x 18 mm but weighs a hefty 130g. The 2in 240 x 320 pixel, 256k colour screen is going to disappoint no one and the inbuilt media player supports MP3, AAC and AAC+ formats. That said, a 256MB memory card is bundled because a rather pitiful 8MB is all that is supplied onboard capacity though the 180 minutes of talk time and 180 hours on standby is perfectly respectable.
The KG920 debuts in August at The Carphone Warehouse and the thought of capturing my friends drunk and performing stupid stunts with previously unforeseen levels of clarity fills me with a giddy sense of pride. After all, has anyone ever taken a serious photo with a camera phone…?
I take it back, regular reader Matthew Hunt runs a fun blog using pictures entirely taken by his Sony Ericsson K800i using its automatic blogging feature. Hats off to you mate :)
