Truphone & Vopium Pile Pressure On iPhone Skype

Since its launch in March Skype on iPhone has garnered a huge amount of press coverage so it can be easy to forget there are many alternatives - two of which actually look better bets...

Stepping up their game this month are Truphone and Vopium. The former today hits v3.0 and boasts "increased ease of use, speed of function response, intuitiveness and simplicity {plus} improved voice quality". Sweetening the deal further is an integrated IM client which ties MSN Messenger, AIM, Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk and - yes - Skype compatibility into a single neat bow.

As for Vopium it makes its debut on the iPhone this month and should create a major splash thanks to the extension of its 'smart VoIP' technology. Unlike other VoIP clients, Vopium works by tightly integrating into a handset's contact list and then automatically routing calls via the cheapest method possible, such as when connected to a WiFi hotspot. On top of this, Vopium also offers a cut rate international SMS service with messages priced at just 9p.

Both Truphone v3.0 and Vopium are available now from the App Store for the best price of all: free.

I said Skype wasn't going to get things all its own way...

Typo on front page - 'in' not 'it'

@Greg - thanks Greg, fixed.

Ok, the question I've got - do any of these (or will any) work over the 3G network, or will they only ever be available on WiFi? Cheers

@Rog - WiFi only, that's long been the big caveat. On 3 has recently accepted VoIP over its 3G network: http://www.trustedreviews.com/...
