Toshiba is a company that has two distinct markets, one focusing squarely on business IT needs and the other focusing on consumer electronics. Ever since the inception of the notebook computer, Toshiba has been at the forefront of mobile technology, building a very strong reputation in the process. But it’s in the consumer world that the majority of people are familiar with the Toshiba brand, so when I was invited to a country retreat in Hertfordshire to sample the new and upcoming Toshiba consumer products, I jumped at the chance.
No doubt, the majority of consumers will associate Toshiba with televisions – the “hello Tosh got a Toshiba” advertising campaign is still well remembered by those old enough to have seen it. But this time around Toshiba isn’t banging on about FST tubes, it has its sights firmly set on High Definition.
The most interesting announcement was that Toshiba is building on the success of its projection DLP TVs, and will be introducing three new models. As the current 42in and 52in DLP TVs come to end of life in the latter half of 2005, we will see the introduction of 46, 56 and 62in models, with all three sets based on the HD4 chipset.
The base level 46in 46WMT58 will feature an integrated digital tuner, a six colour segment wheel, 2000:1 contrast ratio, two HDCP compliant HDMI connectors, three SCART connectors for old skool users and a bundled floor stand. This screen will represent a simple, stylish and integrated step into the world of HD digital television for the consumer.
The 56 and 62in models benefit from the same basic specs, but feature a super-slim bezel around the screen. All three of these TVs are ready to accept a 720p high definition video input. The two HDMI connectors will allow you to hook up your Sky box to one, while connecting your DVD (eventually Blu-ray or HD-DVD) player to the other.
