Toshiba Qosmio First Laptop With HD DVD-RW Drive

When we looked at the Toshiba Qosmio G40-10E back in September it was the world's first notebook to pack a writable HD DVD drive and now a new version is available which ups that to a re-writable version. Considering the only realistic use I can think of for (re-)writable HD DVDs is as a back-up medium this could be a bit of a godsend, especially given the cost of the media.

No information is given regarding write speeds, so one would suspect that they're on a par with the recordable model; about an hour for a single layer disc in the real world if Andy's testing is to be believed (which it is). The rest of system in question will be pretty much the same as its predecessor in all other respects, with a 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB DDR2 RAM and of course the Full HD-resolution supporting 1,920 x 1,200 screen.

Twin (hybrid) TV tuners are also still onboard so you can record your favourite TV programmes to HD DVD and watch them back on any player should you so wish, although with up to 400GB of hard drive space that should hardly be necessary. Even if you did fancy grabbing one of these you'll be disappointed as availability is currently limited to Japan, with launch slated for the 21st of this month. Pricing is set at around £1,800 for the specification detailed.
