Portable computing is a constantly evolving beast these days with the advent of tablet computing and even tablet/netbook computing it is hard to know where to look when trying to find the one machine you want. And as if we didn't have enough choice as it was, thankfully, Toshiba has decided to release a new family of netbooks which will ship just after Christmas.
The NB500 family of netbooks includes the flagship NB520 – which has integrated Harman/Kardon speakers - and the NB500, which doesn’t have integrated Harman/Kardon speakers. Both sport 10.1in screens and come in a range of cheerful colours such as blue, brown or green. The NB520 is the first Toshiba to boast the dual-core Atom N550 processor which should see it get an advantage over its netbook rivals – of which there are many.
Elsewhere in the NB520, it’s pretty much standard netbook fare with 1GB of RAM, Windows 7 Starter Edition, 250GB hard drive and a maximum resolution on the 10.1in screen of 1,024x600. With a battery life of ten hours (so says Toshiba) it seems as if the NB520 is hoping the snazzy speakers, natty colours and faster processor will be enough to make it stand out from the crowd.
As for the poor man’s model, the NB500, it will offer an Intel Atom N455 CPU and an estimated eight hours of battery life with the same 1,024x600 screen. Also you can get the NB500 in resin black as well as the other three colours mentioned above. Both netbooks have inbuilt webcams with microphones, three USB 2.0 ports, 2-in-1 Card Reader and both weigh just over 1.3kgs which is pretty light.
No pricing has been announced as of yet but we assume the basic NB500 model will be cheaper than the NB520 but after that we don’t have a clue so stay tuned for more information as we get it.
